History of the Château

Our wedding venue has a story that stretches back over eight centuries, woven into the rich history of Gascony. The founder of the château first settled here in the 12th century, establishing his estate on land once belonging to a Roman nobleman. Over the next four centuries, his descendants became important figures in the region — serving as consuls, overseeing civic affairs, and helping build one of the oldest bastide villages in Gascony. They left behind castles, cathedrals, and a trove of local legends.

In the 16th century, one notable heir famously introduced his circle to the secrets of Armagnac, France’s oldest distilled spirit and a symbol of the region’s proud gastronomic traditions.

The château remained part of the local landscape for centuries, and in the early 20th century, it was acquired by the family of the current owners. They revived the property’s legacy by producing their own Armagnac brand, which quickly became a beloved name in French gastronomy.

Today, the estate is also home to the Vignes de Victoire, which produces two wines — a white and a red — reserved exclusively for guests of the château. It’s a place where history, tradition, and Gascon hospitality are still very much alive, and we feel so lucky to be celebrating here with all of you.

The Journey to Gascony

Part 1: Getting to France

The journey to Chateau de Malliac begins with your flight into France. The two most convenient international airports for reaching the Gers region are Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) and Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD). Toulouse is generally the more direct option for the château, while Bordeaux offers a beautiful scenic drive.

For Guests from Montreal & North America

You'll likely have a connecting flight through a major European city such as Paris, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt. Airlines to consider include Air Canada, Air Transat, Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa. We highly recommend booking your international flights 5 to 8 months in advance, especially for travel in June, to secure the best prices and availability. Setting up price alerts is a smart way to track fares!

  • Important Note: Air Transat has a direct flight from Montreal to Bordeaux.

For Guests from within France/Europe

Domestic flights to both Toulouse and Bordeaux are readily available. Consider airlines like Air France, easyJet, and Ryanair.

Booking your flights 2-4 months in advance is generally advisable.

Part 2: Getting to Chateau de Malliac

Once you've arrived in France, the next step is reaching Chateau de Malliac. The Gers is a rural region with very limited public transportation directly to the château, so renting a car is highly recommended for easy access to the venue and for exploring the beautiful Gascony countryside.

Renting a Car

Cars can be easily rented from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, and the main train stations in both cities.

Approximate Driving Distances to Chateau de Malliac:

  • From Toulouse Airport: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • From Bordeaux Airport: 1.5 to 2 hours

Important Note on Transmission: Most rental cars in Europe have manual transmission (stick shift).

If you're not comfortable driving a manual, you MUST specifically request an AUTOMATIC transmission vehicle when you book.

Availability for automatics can be limited, so securing this well in advance is crucial.

Navigating Rural France: Driving in the French countryside is generally a pleasure. Roads are well-maintained, though some can be narrow and winding.

A GPS or a good navigation app (like Google Maps or Waze) will be invaluable.

Alternative: The Paris Stopover & Train Journey South (Optional)

If you'd like to experience the Parisian atmosphere before heading to the countryside, France's fantastic high-speed TGV train network is an excellent option.

  • Paris to Toulouse: The train journey from Paris (usually Gare Montparnasse or Gare d'Austerlitz) to Toulouse Matabiau station typically takes 4.5 to 7 hours.

  • Paris to Bordeaux: A quicker journey, often just over 2 hours, from Paris (usually Gare Montparnasse) to Bordeaux St-Jean station.

Booking Tip: Train tickets are typically released 3-4 months in advance via SNCF Connect, the official vendor. Booking early often secures the best fares (look for "PREM's" tickets).

Need Assistance?

If you're unable to drive or would prefer assistance with transportation from the airport or train station to your accommodation and the venue, please contact us. We'll do our best to help coordinate carpooling among guests.
